THE BASICS —
A vintage engagement ring can be a dynamic choice for any bride-to-be to symbolize their unique relationship.  Engagement rings are stylish and distinctive, depending on the era chosen.  Understanding the center diamond’s color and clarity, and knowing the origin of the center gemstone can help determine a specific vintage ring is the one to represent your relationship, while also showcasing your style and flair.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW–
• About GIA Certified Diamonds
The GIA (or Gemological Institute of America) is the world’s most trusted name in diamond grading and gem identification with offices in New York City, California and all over the world. As the institute says, “With objectivity and expertise as its hallmarks, the GIA ensures the integrity and accuracy of every report it issues.” GIA tests every material submitted to determine whether or not it is natural, and discloses any treatments discovered during examination. The GIA will also include information on every diamond including the infamous 4 c’s; color, cut, clarity, and carat, while also including the actual proportion of the diamond, including millimeters, depth percentage, table percentage, girdle, polish, cut, symmetry, culet and fluorescence information.

• Vintage Engagement Rings Without a GIA Certificate

Many vintage and antique engagement rings feature center European cut or mine cut diamonds, and precious gemstones with certificates. However, not all vintage rings will have certificates due to a specific setting.  GIA will only grade loose diamonds and will not grade diamonds that are mounted in settings.  Many settings will have prongs that can not be touched, or bezel set mountings that can not be removed without damaging the setting.

• Gemstone Origin and Treatments

Many precious gemstones today will have some form of heat or oil treatment performed in order to enhance the color of the specific stone. The GIA institute will grade all types of gemstones for these treatments and also identify the origin of the stones. Gemstones without treatment are considered very rare and are in very high demand.

• The Fifth C

Anyone in the vintage jewelry market buying an engagement ring will quickly learn the GIA’s four Cs – color, cut, clarity, and carat – but antique diamonds are different.  We have learned the four Cs which still apply to antique and vintage diamond rings, but you need to consider one extra “C” which is Character. These stones have extremely rich histories and showcase the values and qualities of a wide range of historical eras. A vintage ring may have a personal connection having been part of a family’s history. It could also have distant connections to royalty or historic events.  It could even have a unique beautiful symbolism.

Choosing a GIA Certified Diamond
When shopping for a vintage engagement ring, you want to be sure the quality of the diamond you are considering matches your expectations. As one of the biggest decisions you will make in your life, you want to have full confidence in the diamond you select, therefore always look for a diamond that is accompanied by a GIA diamond report for all of your diamond and gemstone information. In addition to purchasing an engagement ring from your favorite era, purchasing one with a GIA certificate gives you confidence knowing you purchased a diamond that is authentic, and contains all of the qualities you were looking for.
