What is Single’s Day?

Single’s Day is a one-day, 24 hours, once a year event when single people celebrate their single status.

For many, it has become a shopping holiday and an opportunity to enjoy significant discounts and promotions across a wide range of goods including luxury items.

When is Single’s Day?

Single’s Day is celebrated across the World on November 11th each year. The confusion caused by launching an alternative day in the UK means that some organisations direct shoppers to March 11th. However, since November 11th has received Worldwide attention, many regard this day as the official date to mark the event.

Origin and significance

The day originated in China as an unofficial holiday. It began in 1993 when four male students at the Nanjing University decided to honour their singledom with a day of celebration. Since then, the occasion spread, aided by the rise of social media and now receives a Worldwide stage.

The significance of the date centres around the symbolism of the number 1, and this single digit represents a single person.

The Chinese word Pinyin relates to a bare stick—an unmarried, unattached man, yet to add branches to the family tree. The day was originally named Bachelor’s Day, but the name changed due to widespread popularity across both sexes. In fact,

The eleventh month of November represented by 11 represents two individuals finding each other. For this reason, Single’s Day celebrates single status and the discovery of love and the fulfilment of a relationship.

The symbol 11-11 has become a recognised symbol for the event and indicates the day and month when singles and couples celebrate the day.

This occasion has helped reduce the stigma of being single, but conversely, many couples have adopted the day to get engaged and married.

Single’s Day Sales

Fact: Did you know sales on this day account for more than four times the sales volume made on Black Friday and Cyber Monday? This year the day will gross more than Worldwide sales of Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. Far more than the previous year. It has become the largest shopping day in the World.

In 2020 more than 74 Billion Dollars in online sales took place on this day through online retailer Alibaba. Furthermore, the event continues to grow at a rate of approximately 25% per year.

Celebrating across the World

Today, Single’s Day take centre stage on November 11th across many countries. In particular, Indonesia and the Far East. Also, Nordic countries now celebrate the event, sponsored largely by retail manufacturers, as a commercial event for sales. On this shopping day, many online shopping stores offer significant discounts ahead of the pre-Christmas season’s popular Black Friday and Cyber Monday events.
